The Beckstoffer Georges III Vineyard (GIII) stands as one of Napa Valley’s most prestigious and historically significant vineyards, located in the renowned Rutherford appellation. Its origins date back to the early 19th century when it formed part of a larger property owned by George C. Yount, Napa Valley’s first settler. By the 1940s, the vineyard came under the ownership of Beaulieu Vineyard (BV), becoming a key source for their iconic Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1988, Andy Beckstoffer acquired the vineyard, ushering in a new era of modernization. In the early 2000s, Beckstoffer revitalized the site with cutting-edge viticultural practices, incorporating premier clones and rootstocks to optimize the vineyard’s potential.
Situated in Rutherford, Beckstoffer GIII benefits from alluvial fan soils, which are rich yet well-draining, making them perfect for cultivating complex, structured Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyard thrives under Rutherford’s warm days and cool nights, which balance ripeness with acidity and tannic structure. Its gravelly loam soils also promote excellent drainage, reducing vine vigor and concentrating flavors in the fruit. Primarily planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, the vineyard produces wines celebrated for their “Rutherford Dust” profile—an earthy minerality with notes of cocoa and tobacco. These wines capture the essence of Napa Valley’s exceptional terroir and are sought after for their balance, depth, and remarkable age-worthiness.
